All the Difference in The World

Every Sunday morning I take a light jog around a park near my home. There’s a lake located in one corner of the park. Each time I jog by this lake, I see the same elderly woman sitting at the water’s edge with a small metal cage sitting beside her.

When he failed to heal their disputes by his exhortations, he determined to give them a practical illustration of the evils of disunion; and for this purpose he one day told them to bring him a bundle of sticks. He next unclosed the faggot, and took the sticks separately, one by one, and again put them into their hands, on which they broke them easily. He then addressed them in these words: "My sons, if you are of one mind, and unite to assist each other, you will be as this faggot, uninjured by all the attempts of your enemies; but if you are divided among yourselves, you will be broken as easily as these sticks."

Although we usually consider light to be a wave phenomenon, that is not the only possible view. The idea that light is composed of a stream of particles is also consistent with the observation that a beam of light from a flashlight or a laser seems to travel in straight lines except when it encounters an interface between two optical media. We call this straight-line path a ray of light. The ray model allows us to explain in simplest terms the formation of images by lenses and mirrors.

However, light displays particle like characteristics when it interacts with matter, as it does, for example, when sunlight falls on a leaf and photosynthesis takes place. The apparent conflict over this wave-particle duality can not be understood with just the theories of Newton or Maxwell, but is resolved by the twentieth-century theory of quantum mechanics.

The realization that light was the same as the electromagnetic radiation predicted by Maxwell’s equations united the studies of visible light makes up only a small portion of the entire electromagnetic spectrum (figure below), which spans many orders of magnitude. There are no sharp dividing lines separating the various regions; there is just a continuous blending from one region to the next.
