二、知識要點:
1. He is ringing up some pop starts, he wants them to play in a concert.
他在給流行歌星打電話,想請他們在音樂會上演出.
和打電話有關的短詞:ring up, call up給某人打電話。ring off, hang up掛斷電話。
hold on一會兒。ring back, call back回電話。
eg. ①I’ll ring you back in 10 minutes. Now, I’m ringing off.
我十分鐘以后再給你回電話,現(xiàn)在先掛了。
②If you can’t come, ring up and let me know.
要是你不能來,打電話告訴我。
play“演奏… (樂器)”,“演出”。
①She plays the violin quite beautifully.
她的小提琴拉得很好。
②He was Playing an old tune on his guitar.他正用吉他彈一首老曲子。
2. … as I need to have a look at my diary and I haven’t got it with me.
我得看一看日記本,可我沒把它帶在身上。
need to do:需要干某事。
eg. ①I need to ask them for help with my work.
我需要請他們幫助工作。
②We need to invite our professors to the conference.
我們需要邀請教授會來參加會議。
need作情態(tài)動詞表示需要,常用在否定句中,“不必干某事”。
eg. ①—Must I do it now? 我必須現(xiàn)在做嗎?
—No, you needn’t. 不用。
②It’s still early, you needn’t hurry.
還早著呢,你不用急。
3. This time he has more difficulty in getting through.
eg. ①Do you have any difficulty in understanding spoken English?
你聽英語口語有困難嗎?
②There is some difficulty in getting everyone have in time.

3. It’ll be the biggest live concert the world has ever seen.
這是全世界所看到的最大型的現(xiàn)場直播音樂會。
live現(xiàn)場直播的;實況直播的。
eg. ①It was a live broadcast, not a recording.
那是現(xiàn)場直播不是錄音廣播。
②live show現(xiàn)場表演 live TV programmer現(xiàn)場電視節(jié)目
4. His greatest success has not been in singing but in organizing other singers to sing for him-
fors-free. 他的最大成功不在于他個人的演唱,而在于組織別的歌手為他演唱,而且
是免費的演唱。
not… but…, 不是…而是…用來連接兩個并列的成分,表示意思上的轉(zhuǎn)折。
①He can’t repair a car, but can drive it.
他不會修車,但會開。
②They need not money, but help.
他們需要的不是錢而是幫助。
③Not the students but the teacher thinks so.
不是學生這么想,而是老師這樣想。
for free免費地=for nothing / without payment.
①He got the book for free. 他免費得到了這本書。
②You can’t get something for nothing. 不付出就什么也得不到。
③They supply water to people for free. 他們給人們免費提供水。
5. He left school and worked first in a food factory and later as a worked building roads.
他畢業(yè)后,先在一家食品廠工作,后來當過筑路工。
leave school畢業(yè),放學回家。
eg. He had to leave school for some reason.
由于某種原因,他退學了。
按動作發(fā)生的時間順序,由first…and later表示:首先…然后…
eg. ①First think, and later you may get the answer.
先考慮一下,再得出答案。
②He told us first about the cause and later about the result of the accident.
他先給我們講了事故發(fā)生的原因,然后講了事故的后果。
work as作…的工作,是…職業(yè)、身份。
①He works as a dentist in the hospital.
他在醫(yī)院里是牙醫(yī)。
②First she worked as engineer and then as a government official.
她先是作工程師,然后到政府部門工作。
6. From 1979 to 1982 they were the top group in Britain, but in 1982 the group stopped
playing together.
top adj. 最佳的,一流的
eg. ①Some top students in our school will go to England in this Summer.
我們學校的幾個最好的學生今年夏天要去英國。
②top violinist首席小提琴手 top football player最佳足球運動員
stop doing sth. 停止做某事 stop to do停下來做某事
eg. ①I had to stop to talk with him.
我只好停下來去和他說話。
②She stopped walking to have a look.
他停下來看了看。
與此類似的句子還有remember doing sth. 記得做過某事,remember to do sth. 記著去做
某事,forget doing sth.忘了做過某事,forget to do sth.忘了去做某事。
eg. ①I remember telling you about it.
我記得告訴你這件事了。
②When you leave, please remember to turn off the lights.
當你走的時候,記得關燈。
③I forget posting the letter.
我忘了已經(jīng)把信發(fā)了。
④I forgot to lock the door yesterday.
昨天我忘了鎖門了。
7. If they managed to sell lots of copies, then the money from the record sales could be spent on
food and other things for Africa.

manage: 管理、負責,設法完成某事。(Succeed in dealing with something difficult )

spend money on sth. / doing花錢做某事
eg. ①How much did you spend on the dictionary?

②He spent much of his money in organizing the concert.
他花了不少錢組織這場音樂會。
8. He wanted to see for himself what the problems were.
他想親自去看看那兒的困難情況。
see for oneself: 親眼看看,自己去看。
eg. ①If you don’t believe me go and see for yourself.
要是你不信我,自己去看吧。
②She said that was true, though she didn’t see it for herself.
她說那是對的,盡管她并沒親眼看到。
9. He soon realized that hunger was only one of the problems in the African countries which he
risited.
realize:認識到,實現(xiàn)
eg. ①I realize that you need help.
我知道你需要幫助。
②He said sorry / to me when he realized his mistake.
他意識到自己的錯以后向我道歉了。
10. He started thinking about another project. 他開始考慮另一個計劃了。
think about:考慮(consider doing / sth.)
eg. ①I shall like to think about your suggestion before I give you a reply.

②We are thinking about going to America, but we haven’t decided yet.
我們在考慮去美國的事,但還沒決定。
11. He persuaded all the world-famous pop stars to come and sing at one of these concerts for

persuade sb. …sb. be persuaded to do說服某人做某事。
eg.①We persuaded him.

②He was persuaded to try again.

12. He also persuaded other people to provide money or to give help.

provide sth. for sb. / provide sb. with sth. 供給,供應
eg.①He had to provide food and clothes for his family.

13. Bob asked all the airlines to fly the pop stars for free.
鮑勃請求所有的航空公司免費運送這些歌星。
fly:飛行,用飛機運送,放飛。
eg. ①He will fly from London to Paris tomorrow.

14. He told the BBC that he wanted 17 hours of non-stop TV time….

Non-stop中間不停留的。
eg.①It was a non-stop performance that lastes 3 hours.

15. By the end of the year, the total money collected had come to over 92 million dollars, all of

eg.①By the time he was twelve, he had built a lab for his own.

Tim managed to stop his car thirty meters beyond Dave’s burning machine. He climbed out. One of the firemen was running up the road, but he was more than a hundred meters away from the burning wreck (殘骸). He would never get to Dave in time.
Tim’s racing suit would not burn for about a minute even in the hottest fire. He ran to the burning car. He could see Dave in his seat with his head on the wheel. Tim took a deep breath and stepped into the fire. He took hold of Dave’s arms, pulled him out of the car and put him on the grass. “We must get him away from here.” The fireman said. “It’s too dangerous.” He tried to push Tim to one side.
“Nobody’s moving him,” Tim said, and shook off the fireman’s hand.
“Nobody’s moving him until a doctor comes.”
