46. down the road (一段時(shí)間)后
A: I want to quit. Having to take care of a baby and go to school at the same time is simply too much for me.

美國人中很多人都比我們?cè)缁�。一面�?a class="channel_keylink" href="http://www.lotusphilosophies.com/" title="大學(xué)">大學(xué)、一面要照顧小孩子, 甚至還要賺錢養(yǎng)自己的人也不少, 蠻辛苦的。
"down the road" 和 "down the line" 都是指「某一段時(shí)間」以后的意思, 用法也相同。
"hang in there" 是「撐下去吧!」的意思。比如有朋友對(duì)目前的工作狀況沒有突破, 心情很郁卒, 你也可以用這個(gè)詞語。
47. drag one's feet 對(duì)某事拖延
A: Shouldn't you guys have finished this project two weeks ago?
A: 你們不是應(yīng)該在二個(gè)星期前就完成這個(gè)工作了嗎?
B: It's Niles. I don't know why he's dragging his feet like this.
B: 是 Niles 啦! 不知道他怎么這么會(huì)拖。
"drag" 是「拖拉」的意思, "drag one's feet" (原意: 拖著腳)就有「拖延不完成」的意思。
48. down the drain 付之一炬
A: I heard Lyle lost $2,000 at the Las Vegas last night.

"drain"是「排水管」的意思。所以"down the drain" (原意: 沖到排水管里)就引申有「付之一炬」的意思。這個(gè)詞組并不一定用在金錢方面。好象有人因?yàn)槟硞�(gè)事件而使他的努力都白費(fèi)了, 就可以說 "All his best efforts seemed to go down the drain."。
49. in a snap 馬上
A: Oh, no. It's going to take all night to fix this stupid computer, isn't it? How am I going to turn in my homework tomorrow morning?
A: 噢! 糟了! 修這個(gè)蠢計(jì)算機(jī)是不是要花整個(gè)晚上呢? 我明天早上要怎么交功課呢?

嗯! 這個(gè)天才絕對(duì)不是我, 我是那種計(jì)算機(jī)有問題只會(huì)叫救命的人。"snap" 除了動(dòng)詞的「折斷」的動(dòng)作外, 還有像姆指與食指一起, 「ㄆㄧㄚ!」一聲的那個(gè)動(dòng)作的'意思。常配合其它的字來形容「極短的時(shí)間」或「很容易的事」。好象"It's as easy as a snap."(某事很容易)或"It's as quick as a snap."(某事很快)等.
50. spill the beans 說出秘密
A: I heard that you and Philip got engaged.
A: 我聽說你和 Philip 訂婚了。
B: What? That's supposed to be a secret. Who spilled the beans?.
B: 什么? 那本來應(yīng)該是個(gè)秘密。是誰說出去的?
"be engaged" 是「訂婚」的意思。
