第167講：out the window; out of this world

我們已經(jīng)給大家介紹過兩個(gè)由out這個(gè)字組成的習(xí)慣用語。他們是：Out of the woods和out of the picture。Out of the woods 是渡過了難關(guān)；out of the picture是某人不再參與。今天我們再來給大家講解兩個(gè)和out這個(gè)字有關(guān)的習(xí)慣用語。第一個(gè)是：Out the window。

Window就是窗子。你一看到out the window這幾個(gè)字可能馬上會理解為：在窗戶外面。但是，作為習(xí)慣用語，out the window的意思是突然失去了、或者是浪費(fèi)了某樣?xùn)|西。我們可以突然失去錢財(cái)。要是一個(gè)人運(yùn)氣不好，他的辛勤勞動也可能白費(fèi)，就像下面這個(gè)例子里說的一樣：

"My husband and I saved for ten years to open our own restaurant. And we worked six months to get it ready. Then the day after we opened, we had a big fire and all our money and hard work went out the window."

這個(gè)人真算是倒了霉。她說：“我丈夫和我為了自己開餐館攢錢攢了十年。我們還花了半年的時(shí)間準(zhǔn)備開張�？墒�，飯館開張的第二天，飯館起了一場大火。我們所有的錢和辛勤的勞動全部完了�！�

實(shí)際上，美國一般的住家和商店都有保險(xiǎn)，不僅房子有保險(xiǎn)，而且里面的東西也都按它們的價(jià)值去買保險(xiǎn)，因此，萬一遇到了災(zāi)難不至于傾家蕩產(chǎn)。要是上面講的那家飯館由于剛開張而沒來得及保險(xiǎn)，那可真是太不幸了。

我們再來把這句話用慢速度念一遍：

"My husband and I saved for ten years to open our own restaurant. And we worked six months to get it ready. Then the day after we opened, we had a big fire and all our money and hard work went out the window."

下面是一個(gè)人為了舉行一個(gè)聚會做了好多準(zhǔn)備工作，可是，客人最后沒有來，因此他很生氣。他說：

"I've spent all weekend getting ready for my party -- shopping, cleaning and cooking. But my guests called at the last minute to say they couldn't come. Well, all my efforts went out the window. Let me tell you, I won't invite them again."

這個(gè)人說：“為了這個(gè)聚會，我花了整個(gè)周末做準(zhǔn)備 -- 買菜，打掃，做菜�？墒�，我請的客人到最后一分鐘打電話來，說他們來不了了。我真是白費(fèi)工夫。我告訴你，我下次再也不請他們了�！�

美國人要請客一般都要在一、兩個(gè)星期前告訴被邀請的人聚會的地點(diǎn)和時(shí)間，你還請了些什么客人。對方要是接受了邀請，最好不要隨便改變主意，即便發(fā)生意外的事，使你參加不了聚會的話，也最好在幾天前通知東道主。因?yàn)橐话闳丝赡茉谇皫滋炀烷_始采購和做準(zhǔn)備，臨時(shí)告訴主人不去參加聚會是很不禮貌的。

我們再把上面這句話慢慢地念一遍：
