第137講：skin deep; that really gets under my skin
今天我們要給大家講的兩個習(xí)慣用語都是和皮膚，也就是英文里的skin有關(guān)。 由于皮膚是在外表又很薄，所以美國人有這么一種說法：skin-deep。
Deep就是深淺的深。Skin-deep從字面來解釋就是：像皮膚那樣深，實際上也就是中文里說的“膚淺”。當(dāng)一個人感情不真實，或者一件事并不像它表面上看起來的那樣，人們往往會用skin-deep這個常用語來形容它。我們來舉個例子：
"Joe likes to brag about all the friends he has. But to tell the truth, his friendships are only skin-deep -- the only person he really cares about deep down in his heart is himself."
這句話的意思是：“喬伊老是喜歡吹噓他有好多朋友。但是，說實話，他和這些朋友的友情都很膚淺。他心目里真正關(guān)心的一個人就是他自己�！�
像這種只關(guān)心自己，不真心關(guān)心朋友的人不僅在美國有,在哪兒都能碰到。一般來說,美國人是很熱情,以助人為樂的。
美國人有一句老話,那就是：beauty is only skin-deep。
Beauty就是美麗的意思。Beauty is only skin-deep，這個說法的意思就是：美貌只是表面現(xiàn)象。換句話也就是說，外表的美貌并不能說明這個人的本質(zhì)。下面這個例句就說明了這一點：
"Sure, Mrs. Brown is the best-looking woman in town. But you know what they say: beauty is only skin-deep. Underneath, she's about as mean and sti ngy as anybody can be."
這個人說：“當(dāng)然羅，布朗太太是當(dāng)?shù)刈钇恋囊粋�女人。但是，你知道大家都在說：美貌只是表面現(xiàn)象。實際上，她比誰都刻薄和小氣�！�
下面我們要講的一個習(xí)慣用語也是和skin這個字有關(guān)的，而且也很生動：that really gets under one's skin。
Really是確實的意思，under the skin按字面解釋是在皮膚下面的意思。但是，這種現(xiàn)象似乎是不現(xiàn)實的。我們現(xiàn)在講的是俗語，that really gets under one's skin作為俗語，它的意思就是一個人感到很煩燥和厭煩。實際上和皮膚沒有什么關(guān)系，而用在描寫情緒的時候更多一些�，F(xiàn)在，我們先來給大家舉個例子，這是一個老師在說他的學(xué)生：
"Most of the kids in my fifth period English class are great, but Billy Brown really gets under my skin. He never stops talking, he teases the girls until they cry, and he never turns in his homework on time."
這位老師說：“在我第五節(jié)英語課里的大多數(shù)學(xué)生都非常好。但是，比利.布朗真讓我討厭。他說話說個沒完。他還老逗那些女孩，直把她們逗哭了為止。而且他從來也不準(zhǔn)時交作業(yè)�！�
大家可以看到，這句話里沒有什么和皮膚有關(guān)系的地方。但是，美國人常用 that really gets under one's skin這個說法來形容討厭和煩燥的情緒。
下面我們再來給大家舉個例子。這是一個辦公室的工作人員在說他的同事：
"Jack is a nice guy but he has one habit that really gets under my skin: he sits there all day and cracks his knuckles. You know, I think he doesn't even realize he's doing it."
