第32講：sing the blues; like a bolt out of the blue

美國(guó)的成語(yǔ)和俗語(yǔ)五彩繽紛。其中有一些是和紅顏色有關(guān)，如：red letter day 和 red tape。有的和綠顏色有關(guān)。如：green thumb 和 green light。不管是紅或是綠，它們都含有特殊的意思。

今天我們要講兩個(gè)和藍(lán)顏色，也就是英語(yǔ)里的 blue 這個(gè)字有關(guān)的成語(yǔ)。在日常生活中，blue是一個(gè)非�？谡Z(yǔ)的詞匯，美國(guó)人經(jīng)常使用。它的意思就是情緒很低。正因?yàn)槿绱�，blues 這個(gè)字就成了爵士音樂里面的一種。稱謂 blues 的這種爵士音樂，它的特點(diǎn)是節(jié)奏慢，曲調(diào)很低沉。

在日常會(huì)話中，要是你對(duì)一個(gè)朋友說(shuō): "I really have the blues today." 這就是說(shuō)，你今天因?yàn)槟撤N原因情緒很不好。

現(xiàn)在，我們先來(lái)講一個(gè)和 blue 有關(guān)的俗語(yǔ)：singing the blues。Singing 的原動(dòng)詞是sing，就是唱歌、唱戲的唱。Singing the blues 的意思就是訴苦、抱怨。請(qǐng)聽下面這個(gè)例子：

"Every time I ask Joe to pay back the money he borrowed from me, he sings the blues about all the things at home he needs money for."

這人說(shuō)：“每當(dāng)我要喬還他借我的錢的時(shí)候，他總是訴苦，說(shuō)他家里有多少開支�！�

換句話說(shuō)，就是喬用訴說(shuō)家里的種種困難來(lái)做借口，設(shè)法不還他欠的錢。我們?cè)賮?lái)舉個(gè)例子：

"Don't pay any attention to that guy! He's always singing the blues about how poor he is, but the truth is he has more bucks in the bank than the two of us put together."

這個(gè)人說(shuō)：“別聽那家伙的話。他老是訴苦，說(shuō)他多么窮�？墒�，事實(shí)上，他銀行里的錢比我們兩人的加在一起還多�！�

下面我們要介紹的另一個(gè)俗語(yǔ)是 like a bolt out of the blue。Bolt 是閃電，blue 在這兒是指藍(lán)色的天空。 Like a bolt out of the blue 的意思就是晴天霹靂，也就是出乎意外、沒料想到。有時(shí)，你花幾個(gè)小時(shí)也解不開一道數(shù)學(xué)題�？墒�，當(dāng)你不再去想它的時(shí)候，你腦子里突然出現(xiàn)了答案。人們還經(jīng)常用 like a bolt out of the blue 來(lái)形容車禍。請(qǐng)聽下面這句句子：

"A driver may testify that he was going the normal speed limit when a truck appeared in front of him out of the blue and he did not have time to stop."

這句話的意思是：“一個(gè)開車的人可能會(huì)在作證時(shí)說(shuō)，正當(dāng)他以正常的速度行駛的時(shí)候，一輛卡車突然出現(xiàn)在他面前，他來(lái)不及剎車�！�

我們?cè)俾犅犗旅孢@個(gè)學(xué)生講的話:

"The announcement that the president of our university was quitting to go to another school hit us like a bolt out of the blue. He's always said he liked it here so much he would stay until he retired."

他說(shuō)：“我們大學(xué)校長(zhǎng)宣布他決定辭職到另外一個(gè)學(xué)校去工作。我們都感到很突然，因?yàn)樗�老是說(shuō)他很喜歡這個(gè)學(xué)校，要一直在這兒工作到退休�！�

今天我們講了兩個(gè)俗語(yǔ)。一個(gè)是 singing the blues；另一個(gè)是 like a bolt out of the blue。
